A List Of Acceptable South Beach Diet Foods
If you’re planning to start or have recently started the South Beach Diet or plan to start the South Beach Diet, one of your first questions will probably be, “What am I allowed to eat?” Well, the general idea is to focus on lean meats and other great protein foods that are low in saturated fat. For example, low fat cuts of beef, pork and poultry are good choices. Fatty red meats are not. Can you eat sweets while on the South Beach Diet? What about bread or pasta?
Wouldn’t it be easier if you had a quick list of all the foods you can eat? If you’re looking for a list of acceptable South Beach Diet foods, below are some ideas in the different food categories that might help you plan your next meal while keeping with your new diet.
Poultry
• Chicken or Turkey: White meat is fine
• Dark meat (occasionally after Phase One)
• Turkey bacon or low fat sausage OK in moderation
• Cornish Hen
When eating poultry, always remember to remove the skin, avoid anything that is breaded and stay away from goose and duck.
Fish and Seafood
All fish and seafood are good while on the South Beach Diet, but nothing breaded or deep-fried. Canned tuna should be packed in water.
Beef: Acceptable Cuts
Beef cuts can be confusing, as names vary a lot. It’s important to know exactly what you are eating so you can see if it is on the approved list.

• Ground beef with less than 10-percent fat

Cuts from the Sirloin, which can be called:
• Tri-Tip
• Sirloin Steak

• Coulotte Steak
• Cap Steak
• Round-Bone Steak
• Beef Loin
• Flap Steak
• Flap Meat
Cuts from the Round, which can be called:
• Bottom Round
• Top Round
• Eye (of the) Round
• Round Tip Roast
• Rump Roast
• Round Tip Steak
• Ball Tip Steak
• Beef Sirloin Tip Steak
• Breakfast Steak
• Knuckle Steak
• Sandwich Steak
• Minute Steak
• Round Steak
Other Acceptable Beef Cuts:
• Flank Steak
• London Broil
Pork
• Boiled ham
• Tenderlion
• Loin
• Lean, well-trimmed chops
• Canadian bacon
• Occasional crisp-cooked, well-drained bacon (best as a garnish)
Lamb
• Leg of lamb, well-trimmed of fat
• Lamb chop as an occasional treat
Veal
• Top Round
• Leg cutlet
• Chop
Lunch Meats
Lunch Meats should be sugar-free and low in fat, such as deli turkey.
Other Protein Sources
• Eggs
• Tofu
• Seitan
• Tempeh
• Beans
• Low fat meat substitutes
Now for the Sweet Stuff
If you’re on the South Beach Diet, don’t think that you won’t be able to ever enjoy sweet snacks. There are some that are approved on the South Beach Diet, based on what phase you are on. Here are some ideas to help you know what’s acceptable to eat.
Sweet Treats for South Beach Diet Phase One
You will be limited to a total of 75 calories worth per day of any of the following sugar-free treats. Acceptable foods:
• Candies - sugar-free hard candies only
• Chocolate powder - no added sugar
• Cocoa powder, unsweetened baking type
• Fructose
• Fudge pops, no sugar added
• Gelatin - sugar-free
• Gum - sugar-free
• Jams and jellies - sugar-free
• Popsicles - sugar-free
• Syrups - sugar-free
Artificial sweeteners are also acceptable, as listed below.
Sweet Treats for the South Beach Diet Phase Two
All the above foods, plus:
• Occasional small amounts of dark semisweet or bittersweet chocolate
• 1 serving of pudding - fat-free and sugar-free
Approved Artificial Sweeteners
• Acesulfame K(Sunnette®and others)
• Nutrasweet (Equal ®)
• Saccharin (Sweet & Low ®)
• Sucralose (Splenda ®)
Now once you have completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 of your South Beach Diet, you have good news; you can eat anything you want! At this phase, you will be able to determine the proper amount of carbs for your daily intake without gaining weight. If you do see you weight start to go back up, you can adjust and cut back more if you need to.
By the time you have made it to Phase 3, you have developed skills that will become habit for you to help you remain healthy and remain at your goal weight. Phase 3 will no longer feel like a diet and the South Beach Diet will be your new way of life.
