The South Beach Diet: Phase 1

So you have decided to give the South Beach Diet a try? You are prepared to change the way you eat and begin a diet that will make you feel better and look fantastic. Well, you couldn’t have chosen a better diet plan to use. The South Beach Diet is one of the fastest growing plans today and for good reasons. This diet really works and provides a realistic way to reach your goals.

Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet may seem a little drastic at first but keep in mind this phase was designed to only last for a mere 14 days. Therefore, it is practical and realistic to believe that it is achievable and once you get through the initial two weeks of the program, you got it made. Let’s take a closer look at this phase of the South Beach Diet.

As mentioned above this phase is set up to last for two weeks. During this time you will need to eliminate all carbohydrates from your diet. Here are a few examples of some of the foods that you will need to eliminate.

• Potatoes
• Rice
• Bread
• Baked Goods
• Pasta
• Fruits
• Sugar
• Ice cream
• Cookies
• Cakes

You will be allowed to eat normal portioned meals that consist of the following foods.

• Fish
• Beef
• Chicken
• Shellfish
• Turkey
• Cheese
• Eggs
• Garden salads
• Nuts

Keep in mind that when you eat salads you do need to use 100% olive oil as your dressing during this first phase. This is not a full list of the foods you can and cannot eat so you will need to get a complete list before you begin your diet.

During phase 1 you will be able to eat three meals a day that will satisfy your hunger so you never have to worry about not getting enough to eat. This is one of the things that makes this diet so unique compared to others, you are allowed and expected to eat enough to keep you satisfied. Since you have eliminated the carbs that make you feel hungry from your diet you will not be experiencing those hunger pains you have grown so accustomed to. You are allowed two great snacks in-between the meals as well, one between breakfast and lunch and the other between lunch and dinner.

As with any diet you need to drink as much water as possible but you are allowed to have coffee and tea with the South Beach Diet. However, you do need to avoid all types of alcohol during these two weeks. It is not as difficult to stop eating the foods that you need to eliminate during this phase of the diet because you still have so many great options when it comes to foods that you can eat. The fact that this phase only last for two weeks also makes it a lot easier.

Some people may choose to extend phase 1 for another week or two but this is not always a good idea. If you try to go to long without eating the foods you enjoy you will be sitting yourself up to fail. During phase 1 you are expected to lose between 8 to 13 pounds. The reason for this is because you are eliminating carbohydrates from your diet. This allows your blood sugar levels to adjust and your body will not be retaining as much water.

This is the phase in which you are jump starting the diet and even if you choose to continue it for a longer period of time, you still probably would not lose this much every two weeks. Therefore, it would be best if you moved on to the next phase of the diet.
